Went into the Te Rapa Animates store (04/12/17) to have a look at the Betta fish.
Unfortunately when we arrived we couldn't help but notice the poor conditions the Betta fish were living in. After having just visited the Bettas at the other Hamilton store (anzac parade) who had pristine water and much bigger tanks to thrive in we were shocked at the Te Rapa conditions.
The tanks were extremely small and were completely filthy (we could barely see the fish through all of the grime).
Then sadly we noticed one of the Betta's was dead, upside down covered in algae so it had obviously happened quite a while ago.
We had to notify the staff members of this who showed no remorse at all. After notifying the man taking care of the fish section we were very disheartened as he said that it must of happened this morning as he checked on them, yet it was covered in algae which does not happen that fast, we arrived at the store at approximately 11 am.
He also did not wish to hear our concerns regarding the tank conditions. We asked him why the tanks were in this condition to which he replied he cleans them once a week and that is all they need.
Which for that many tanks set up on one system with so many fish it is clear that this isn't enough.
You couldn't even see one of the fish at all due to the tank being so green and mucky.
This situtation is very upsetting as when walking into a reputable pet store such as Animates you expect their animals to have a decent quality of life
while living there and instead we saw the opposite.
We ask that Animates Te Rapa at least meets the standards of the Anzac Parade store, as if one Animates branch can properly take care of
their fish all of them can and should.
